Too much rain, too little sailing

In the sailing world, the "doldrums" are periods of calm, when winds cease and - at least in the days before engines - boats could be stranded for days.

To us, the doldrums are periods of no sailing, of too much work, too much rain and far too long since we last took the boat away from the marina.

Marty and I are jonesing for some sail time. The forecast this weekend calls for winds of up to 30 knots, and it'll probably rain. We may do it anyway. The thought of being safely tied up at the marina on Blake Island, cozy in the cabin, doing a little reading and playing crib, is very appealing.

The notion of several more months of gloomy, grey Seattle winter - not so much.
